Out of Bounds 2008 – Fahrer und Strecke

The preparations for the Out of Bounds Weekend on June 5th-8th are already running. Since 2004, Leogang has been looking forward to having many pro riders and bike fans spend an exciting weekend full of adrenaline in the midst of the Austrian Alps. This year the 26TRIX dirt jump contest will be again the most spectacular highlight of the weekend. But also the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator dual slalom will take place and, of course there will be lots more going on outside of the racetrack.

The Out of Bounds Weekend has become an institution within the European bike summer. The world’s best dirt jumpers are expected to show up on the foot of the Bikepark Leogang to join the 26TRIX competition. Last year’s winners can proof that fact. Andreu Lacondeguy, the young Spanish wildman, became 2nd landing a double backflip. So you can imagine which great style and flow made Jamie Goldman from the US winning the grand final 2007. This year’s Oakley Sick O Award will be given to the one with the best skills and most props on top.

Bikepark Leogang - Out of Bounds - Part Five

But the Out of Bounds Weekend is not about the freeride mountain bike elite only. All enthusiastic riders are invited to sign up for the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator – a thrilling dual slalom for everybody like you and me – on the website of the Bikepark Leogang ( www.bikepark-leogang.com ). Be sure, the HU Cooperation aka “The Leo Gangsters” will please the participants as well as the audience with a beautifully shaped course for the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator.

These are the hard facts, but the whole weekend will have a varied program around these two main competitions:

After an all day long training for the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator on Thursday as well as some fixed training times for it on Friday forenoon and the qualifications of the 26TRIX in the afternoon, the Friday evening will end with a chilled BBQ with all the riders. The Bunny Hop contest during the BBQ will be a lot of fun as well. After the qualifying of the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator and the grand final of the 26TRIX on Saturday, a big party is about to happen: the legendary DeBuam party (featured by Kona), which has been among the party highlights of the entire region in the last few years and has kept the visitors up until the early morning hours. But some of the riders should not forget the finals of the Kona Top 2 Bottom Terminator on Sunday midday. In between all those agenda points, an EXPO area will show the newest stuff from the best brands within the bike sport.

Alles aus Madrid

Qashqai Andreu Lacondeguy gewinnt in Madrid! It was an amazing day at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the home of Real Madrid. Nissan’s course design team built the best Qashqai course yet and the riding was absolutely through the roof!

The Nissan Qashqai Challenge Series is really coming into it’s own, the courses are getting better and better, the judging panel is working very well together and the LIVE time results are quick and accurate on the venue’s flat screens. With beautiful weather, a local DJ spinning smooth euro beats throughout the competition, and live local hip-hop show, it was a great day in the heart of Madrid.

In the finals, Andreu Lacondeguy blew everyone away and scored the highest score of the day with a Superman back flip, into a 360 on the step up, to turn-down on the step down, to a huge extended superman, followed by a clean 360 tailwhip to pedals. Greg Watts was close with a suicide back flip to barspin, into a no-footed cancan on the step up, barspin on the step down, superman seat-grab, into a truck driver to reverse bar spin. Benny Korthaus pulled of the biggest 360-tables of the day and a couple perfect 360-whips, Kyle Strait had his double whips dialled, and Amir Kabbani showed off also rode incredibly well rounding out the top five.

The competition for the final 5 qualifying slots in Munich and London was incredibly tight. Mitchell Chubey, Bartek Obukowicz, Alex Reveles, Tyler McCaul and Andi Wittman can prepare themselves for the big battle urban freeride, which starts next weekend in Germany.

The young riders in contention were riding smart and putting together amazing runs. In a classy move, the organisers, that were so impressed with the level of riding in Milan and Madrid, that they decided to collaborate with the judges and award 5 additional wildcard slots to bump the final rider line-up from 25 to 30 riders at the next two Nissan Qashqai Challenge events. The riders are Martin Soederstroem (winner of Milan’s qualifying), Marius Hoppensack (10th in Milan), Andrew Taylor, Geoff Gulevich and Cameron Zink who are showed all a solid performance in Madrid.

Bikepark WiriehornAm vergangenen Weekend hat der Bikepark Wiriehorn seine Tore geöffnet und die Biker strömten in Scharen herbei. Das äusserst angenehme Wetter, die superschnelle neue Bahn und die allseits beliebte Strecke zauberten jedem Anwesenden ein zufriedenes Grinsen ins Gesicht.

Am Donnerstag war der Himmel noch mit Wolken durchzogen und die Strecke – gemäss Angaben von Locals – noch „ein wenig feucht“. Da wir wissen, bei welchen Verhältnissen die besagten Leute zum Teil noch unterwegs sind, haben wir unseren Trip aufs Weekend verschoben. Am Samstag morgen angekommen, strahlte uns die Sonne entgegen und wir waren ready to rock. Das war dann – wie üblich – auch das Motto des Tages. Durch das Brachliegen im Winter, war die Piste prügelhart und schüttelte auch die Herren mit den richtig fetten Federwegen durch. Das war freilich kein Grund, auf den Spass zu verzichten.

Da letztes Jahr kein Bahnbetrieb herrschte, kennen wohl noch nicht alle die Neuerungen, die eingebaut wurden. Einige Brücken wurden erneuert und ein paar Kicker etwas entschärft. Die Rüttelpartie im Mittelteil (paralell zum Downhill-Track) wurde komplett überarbeitet und bietet jetzt mit zahlreichen Anliegern und kleineren Doubles viel mehr Fahrspass.

Das grosse Highlight an Neuerungen war jedoch definitiv der neue Sessellift. An jedem Sessel können zwei Bikes völlig easy an Haken angemacht werden. Platz haben ganze sechs Leute nebeneinander. Trotz des relativ grossen Ansturms, musste kein Mensch für eine Fahrt anstehen. Die Gemütlichkeit ist also geblieben… wer hätte es anders erwartet, im Berner Oberland.

Am Samstag Abend gab es dann noch eine Flying Mortadella Bar, was innert kürzester Zeit für eine feucht-fröhliche Stimmung an der Talstation sorgte. Die schüchternen Jungs in den unauffälligen pinken Jerseys sind mit der ganzen Kompanie angetreten und haben neben der Bar auch für ein anständiges Feuer und unanständige Sprüche gesorgt. Thanks guys!

Unsere spontane Übernachtunsaktion im Auto war dann eine weniger clevere Idee. Ohne Unterlage, dafür aber mit Wolldecken ausgestattet, haben meine Madame (welche sich bei einem Sturz auch noch die Schulter ziemlich lädiert hatte) und ich mehr gedöst als geschlafen. Das etwas ungute Gefühl, am Morgen noch kaputter zu sein, als am Abend zuvor, wurde von etwas Sonnenschein und Kaffee relativ schnell verdrängt. Der Wunsch möglichst rasch aufs Bike zu steigen, wollte sich jedoch nicht wirklich einstellen. Zu gut, wenn man da ein zweites Hobby zum Ausweichen in der Hinterhand hat. Also machte ich mich auf, ein paar Fotos zu schiessen. Ein paar Resultate könnt Ihr in der Galerie anschauen. Der Flo von den Mortadellas hat am Samstag auch noch einige geknippst. Bikepark Wiriehorn - Back in the game!

Ein weiteres legendäres Weekend am Wiriehorn ist allzu schnell vorbei gegangen. Grossen Trost braucht es dieses Jahr jedoch nicht. Die Bahn ist endlich wieder offen und wir können uns spontan für ein paar Weekends ins Simmental verkriechen.

Noch ein paar Infos am Rande:
– Nächste Woche ist das offizielle Eröffnungsweekend mit dem berühmten No-Chain-Race. Die Jungs von Hot-Trail sorgen bestimmt wieder für ein unterhaltsames Rahmenprogramm.
– Am 7./8. Juni findet der Fotokurs mit Martin Bissig am Wiriehorn statt. Haltet euch den Termin frei, denn so eine perfekte Chance, ein gutes Bild von euch zu erhalten, bekommt Ihr so schnell nicht mehr!

Aegeri Bike Tag 2008

Langsam aber sicher kämpft sich der Frühling durch und die Bikes werden wieder aus den Kellern geholt – oder umgerüstet auf die schneelose Zeit. Wolltest du nicht auch schon lange wieder einmal dein Bike über die genialen Trails rund ums Aegerital, über Gottschalkenberg, Zugerberg, Raten und Wildspitz jagen?

Am Sonntag, 18. Mai 2008 auf dem Schulhausareal Schönenbüel in Unterägeri hast du dazu beste Gelegenheit am Aegeri Bike Tag 2008. Der Aegeri Bike Club bietet dir an diesem Tag ein komplettes Bikeprogramm mit geführten Touren in allen Schwierigkeitsstufen. Das ganze ist als Plauschanlass ausgelegt und wird nicht als Rennen ausgetragen.

Ab 8:30 Uhr morgens kannst du dich für die jeweiligen Touren einschreiben. Die grösste Tour über Zugerberg, Wildspitz, Raten und Gottschalkenberg beginnt gleich um 9:00 Uhr.

Gleichzeitig öffnet auch unsere Festwirtschaft, wo du dich mit Kaffee, Znüni und ab Mittag auch mit Risotto und Kuchen eindecken kannst.

Zusätzlich zeigen dir Bike- und Sportshops aus der Region Aegeri und Umgebung die aktuellsten Trends für das Jahr 2008. Sie werden dir ebenfalls Testbikes zur Verfügung stellen („es hat solange es hat“).

Desweiteren stellen WINFORCE ihr aktuelles Angebot an Produkten zur Sporternährung vor. WINFORCE kümmert sich ebenfalls um die Verpflegung der Sportler/Innen auf den Touren.

Für die kleinsten wird von 11:00 bis 15:00 ein Kidsparcours zur freien Verfügung stehen, wo sie ihre Geschicklichkeit auf dem Bike üben können.

Als Schlussattraktion findet von 15:00 bis 16:00 ein Short-Race (mehrere Fahrer/Innen gleichzeitig gegeneinander) auf einem Parcours rund um das Schulhaus Schönenbühl statt. Teilnahme ist gratis und direkt vor Ort möglich. Der Parcours wird für alle gut fahrbar sein.

Milan, Italy – April 26, 2008: Trond Hansen wins first stop of the 2008 Nissan Qashqai Challenge! Mischa Breitenstein, Sam Pilgrim, Kurt Sorge, Damjan Siriski, and Trond Hansen qualify for the Challenge events in Munich and London.

The crowd in Parco Sempione was treated to an amazing final under sunny skies in downtown Milan today. The qualifier was extremely tight, and many new faces were making their presence known. Young American Tyler McCaul put together impressive runs, but was just shy of making the cut into the finals. He will be one of the many riders making the trip down to the infamous Estadio Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain next week for another shot at qualifying for the final Nissan Qashqai Challenge Events.

The fifteen finalists ran in reverse order, ending with the top qualifier Martin Soederstrom from Sweden. In the finals the wind picked up and riders had to be strategic with their three runs, as their two best scores were combined. Some of the riders like Norway’s Trond Hansen and Switzerland’s Mischa Breitenstein played their cards well and earned their spots in the final challenge events.

In the first round of the finals, Trond uncorked a clean front flip over the final jump for a good first round score. In his next round he earned the highest score of the day as the first rider to pull a clean 360 over the first jump, straight into a one-footed 360 invert, followed by a tire grab to set up for an opposite 360 over the last double. “The last two hours went just perfect, being qualified for the Nissan Qashqai Challenge competition feels just great!” beamed Trond after the award ceremony.

Congratulations to Trond Hansen, Mischa Breitenstein, Sam Pilgrim, Kurt Sorge, and Damjan Siriski for earning spots in the final Qashqai Challenge Events in Munich and London. Next weekend review…

Grüezi Grüezi! Bereits ist eine Woche vergangen seit meinem letzten Eintrag. Also höchste Zeit, wieder öpis von mir hören zu lassen. Es hat sich nix Weltbewegendes getan hier. Die Woche verging sehr schnell, die Schule blieb happig. Wetter: Auch alles beim Alten. D.h. recht wechselhaft und nicht allzu warm (das hat der Mäsi ja eh nicht gern…). Am Donnerstag war im „Commodore Ballroom“ dann die Premiere von „Seasons“, einem Bikefilm angesagt. Unglaublich: vor dem Gebäude bildete sich eine riesige Schlange, alle wollten den Film sehen! Hätte in der Schweiz wahrscheinlich anders ausgesehen. Sogar eine Live-Rock-Band spielte nach der Premiere. Der Film war gut, das Bier günstig, der Abend perfekt! Auf Ausgang hatte ich dieses Weekend nicht wirklich Bock (ist halt auch hier recht teuer….). Lieber am morgen früh bereit sein für ein weiteres Weekend auf dem Bike!! Als ich am Samstag morgen aus dem Fenster guckte, traute ich meinen Auge nicht. Purer Sonnenschein!!!! Schon ganz kribbelig, schletzte ich schnell ein Müsli runter und schnappte mir dann gleich das Bike. Ein weiteres Mal machte ich den Mount Fromme unsicher. Holy shit! Der ganze Berg wurde von Bikern eingenommen, so macht’s Spass! Von Jung bis Alt, von Crosscountry- bis Dropmachine, alles war vertreten. Habe dann auf dem Weg nach oben zwei coole, ältere (schätzungweise 45-50 Jahre alt) Typen kennengelernt, die schon seit sie denken können hier biken.

Sie (und die zwei Dogs) nahmen mich mit, zusammen wollten wir den „Executioner“ unter die Räder nehmen. Also anfänglich den „Seventh Secret“, der aber von ca. 30cm hohem, weichem Schnee bedeckt war, und somit unfahrbar war (wir haben es probiert). Mann war das ein Spass! Und die zwei Typen haben ordentlich Gas gegeben! Respekt! Das eine Mal ist mir fast „Scooter“ in’s Rad gehechtet, uiuiuiui…. da hätten sie wohl keine Freude gehabt. Aber der Hund war ja alt genug, der muss wissen, was er tut. Nach einem längeren Abschnitt auf dem „Baden Powell Trail“, einem Wanderweg, sind wir dann auf dem „Lower Skull“ Trail wieder auf den Mountain Highway gekommen. Awesome!!

Heute Sonntag war’s dann wettermässig nicht mehr zu vergleichen mit gestern: Leichter Regen, nicht mehr ganz so warm, aber zum Biken hat’s doch noch gereicht. Zum Glück! Möchte ja nicht wissen, was wäre, wenn….. oder so 🙂 Da sich mein Schul-Kollege heute bei Steed Cycles ein Giant Reign für läppische 2300 Dollar gekauft hat, ging’s erneut den Berg rauf. Seht euch mal an, wie ein glücklicher Biker aussieht (mit brandneuem Bike):

Dieses Mal mit nassen Wurzeln und Steinen auf dem Trail. Erst jetzt wurde es interessant. Sind heute den „Bobsled“ Trail gefahren, Spass hoch zwei! Ich hatte einen guten Tag und bin den einen oder anderen Sprung, bzw. Gap, bzw. Drop oder was auch immer gesprungen. Auch der Sprung durch die beiden Riesen-Bäume hindurch (Bild) war nicht von schlechten Eltern. Habe es mir lange überlegt, schlussendlich bin ich dann gesprungen (natürlich mit dem Bike, nicht wie auf dem Bild *G*). ADRENALIN!!

Bin zu Hause pflotschnass angekommen, die Kleider sind am trocknen. Und mir gehts prächtig! Wenn da nur nicht die Schule wäre…. sollte noch lernen heute! Also, bis bald!

Mit Sicherheit mehr Spass

FahrtechnikNach über einem Jahr Pause melden wir uns dieses Weekend wieder zurück!

Schon seit etlichen Jahren haben wir mit Rolis Bike Lade Fahrtechnikkurse für Anfänger durchgeführt und nehmen diese Tradition dieses Jahr wieder auf.

Die Gründe für die Durchführung dieser Kurse sind nicht finanzieller Art. Wir geben unser Wissen gerne weiter, freuen uns über die Fortschritte der Kursteilnehmer und lieben den grinsenden Gesichtsausdruck von jedem, der endlich sein Ziel erreicht hat oder mit etwas Mut und Übung seinen inneren Schweinehund überwinden konnte.

Unser Motto – Mit Sicherheit mehr Spass – zieht sich durch den gesamten Kurs und soll den Teilnehmern vermitteln, dass man mit mehr Kontrolle und Sicherheit auf dem Bike auch mehr Spass hat. Das Grinsen auf den Gesichtern der Biker am Ende des Kurses ist Gold wert und bestätigt diese Ansicht jedes mal aufs Neue.

Milan, April 23rd – On Monday 500 m/3 of dirt have been delivered to the Parco Sempione in Milan for the first Nissan Qashqai Challenge event. Within two days the course designers have created a little moon landscape with huge dirt jumps, which are getting ready for the action. The park visitors are passing and wondering what will happen there, they might not know yet. But on April 25th and 26th Parco Sempione, right by the old soccer stadium, will be the place to be not only for the spectators, but also for the best and most ambitious riders for the first Nissan Qashqai Challenge Open 2008.

In total 40 riders from 13 countries – ranging from Puerto Rico to Slovenia – are about to give their best on a nice shaped dirt track. The construction is ongoing these days. Markus Hampl already built last year’s Nissan Qashqai Challenge dirt course. But this time the jumps will be even bigger: An about six meters high roll in will secure the needed speed for the 100 meters long line consisting of four huge sized doubles. The first gap will provide the most airtime and the highest amplitude. Seven meters from the take off to the landing will give the attending progressive young riders the opportunity to show their hardest rocking tricks in front of numerous yelling spectators.

Vienna April 20th – The third anniversary of the Vienna Air King was peppered with a lot of surprises: seventeen years old Sam Pilgrim from Colchester, United Kingdom, proved his enormous potential placing first in the finals. Specialized rider Benny Korthaus was the first rider ever to pull off a clean 360- Double Tailwhip during an international mountain bike competition.

The weekend started on Friday afternoon with the first training session in front of the picturesque Vienna City Hall. By Saturday’s midday the 45 riders from thirteen nations got used to the jumps, which consisted of a decent start drop from the eight meters high starting tower followed by three big sized doubles. The competitors had not only to cope with the technical challenging roller between the last two jumps, but with the fast changing wind conditions during the qualifications.

Compared to last year’s Vienna Air King the riding level definitely went up: Benny Korthaus (GER) stoked the judges with clean runs including a Backflip on the first double as well as 360-Tailwhips and one handed 360 Tabletops. Yannick Granieri’s (FRA) really high Backflips and Sam Pilgrim’s clean riding style including 360-Tabletops secured their way into the finals on Sunday.

The highlight on Saturday, the PANASONIC-Best-Trick-Competition, marked the ending of Vienna Air King’s first contest day. The Top 5 of the qualifying: Martin Soederstroem (SWE), Yannick Granieri, Bartek Obukowicz (POL), Sam Pilgrim (UK) and Benny Korthaus (GER) made the numerous visitors of the Argus Bike Festival yelling for more. The best trick competition was dominated by Benny Korthaus and Sam Pilgrim in the end. Both were not able to pull their tricks clean till their last attempts which could just be described as perfectly exectued: Benny Korthaus’s 360-Double Tailwhip demolished the other five riders’ performance, including Sam Pilgrim’s Backflip Superman. The awards of the PANASONIC-Best-Trick-Competition were given out during the 10-Years-Anniversary party from the Mountainbike Revue Magazine. Apart from the prize giving, the party featured different peak levels including the European premiere of Kranked 7, a trial show, a live concert from Binder & Kriegelstein and a long party night, especially for the ones who didn’t make their way into the finals. Benny was not only happy to win 500 Euros, but a Panasonic 3-chip camcorder, so he will be able to get all his future traveling experiences taped in full HD.

Alexander Etzold – 360 One Hand

Three final runs, of which the best two counted, forced the riders to prove their consistence and trick variety on Sunday. Benny had some bad luck, showing a perfect first run, including a Backflip, 360-Table Top and 360-Tailwhip. The following two runs he had to fight the wind and loosing speed after a 360-drop from the starting tower. Yannick impressed the judges with the highest amplitude back-flipping the first double, being about three meters above the take off, followed by a No Foot Can Can and a 360. Norway’s well known freeriding export Trond Hansen placed fourth after pulling e.g. one run with a Tailwhip, 360-Table Top One Foot and a 360-opposite. The rookie Bartek from Poland made his way to the podium with a huge Backflip, Double Barspin and 360-Table Top. But the most ambitious battle was the fight between the two just 18 years old riders Martin Soederstroem and Sam Pilgrim: Martin dropping in with a 360, tail whipping the first double and ending his best run with a Tuck No Hand followed by a 360-Barspin to X-Up! Sam wasn’t willing to let the matter rest and gave his best in his last two runs pulling: a Backflip-X-Up One Foot, Superman Seatgrap and 360-Tailwhip. Martin would have won the finals with his best run, but with two runs counting, Sam showed more variety overall. One thing is for sure: the next generation of European dirt jump talents is not about to come – it can be stated that they are already a fixture in the international competitions.

Mr. Pilgrim will be pretty glad to take home 2,000 of the 5,000 Euro overall prize money, as well as a Panasonic SD based ultra compact HD cam which was given out to the top three. Sam Vienna Air King title 2008 was well-deserved, but everyone who watched the action live paid big respect to the other riders who reached the Top 15:

Sam Pilgrim – No Foot Backflip

With over 70.000 visitors during the Argus Bike festival and about 6.000 people watching the Vienna Air King grand final – presented by Raiffeisen Club, Nissan, internet-provider “3” and Panasonic – this weekend proved itself as one of the most spectacular and well worth seeing seasons opening events in Europe.
